Unfortunately, in addition to closing the borders to new entrants generally, the Japanese government has announced a pause on the recently introduced 3-day reduced quarantine period accommodation for vaccinated business travelers. As a result, business travelers will not only be unable to visit Japan but will also be unable to apply for a screening certificate for a future trip to Japan until after the pause – which has been tentatively scheduled to continue until the end of December – has been lifted. We had hoped that the government would continue processing applications for screening, as the entire process from screening through visa application and issuance can take anywhere from 5 to 7 weeks – a period longer than the pause itself – but the government has decided instead to halt processing entirely for the meantime as it assesses the threats posed by the omicron variant.
